DOMINION MARKET REPORTS

POTATO PRICES IMPROVE. ONIONS SHARP ADVANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 8. The potato market has improved during the week, April-June delivery now being quoted at £5 10s a ton f.o.b. ■sacks in, and on truck prices to- £-1- ss. A reported scarcity in the Auckland province is the main reason, hut growers in Canterbury are not inclined to accept present prices. Odd inquiries are coming in from Auckland. It is not expected that values, will alter much until the northern demand develops. A fair quantity of potatoes was brought forward for April, and by that month the Auckland position will be more clarified.

There was a sharp advance for onions during the week, and up to £7 a ton on trucks has been paid. Growers are' not offering freely and a fair number of northern orders have come in.

Oats remain very firm, the ruling price for prompt A Cartons being 3s Id to 3s lid f.o.b. sacks in, and for B’s 2s lOd. The fowl wheat market is quiet and quotations are unchanged at 4s 4d f.o.b. sacks extra for board w.heat and 4s 3d for fowl. Peas have firmed rapidly in value and are quoted at 5s 6d/ a bushel on trucks and 6s 3d f.o.b. sacks in. The firming is probably due to the very short crop, and no export is .possible at the price. The advance is puossibly on speculation account in anticipation of an export demand setting in. Chaff is quoted at £4 10s a ton f.o.b. sacks in and is worth £3 on trucks. This is a very satisfactory improvement on rates ruling at this period last season. In the small seeds market cocksfoot is not making the high figures of last week- Alost merchants have bought their stocks and apparently are disinclined to purchase more at the high rates ruling. In any case there is now little left in farmers’ hands. Akaroa. cocksfoot is ouoted at lOd to lid and Plains to lOd. Ryegrass shows little change, being worth 3s a bushel on trucks. Cowgrass samples have been offered and purchases made at lid a. lb. Wliit'* clover is unaltered at 7d to lOd a
