The appointment of Messrs. C. <T. Hawken and .T. B. Murdoch as members of the Patea Licensing Committee, is announced in the current issue of the New Zealand Gazette.
Mrs C. Maerae, who has l;een an inmate of Craigholm private hospital, Hawera, for several weeks past, is reported to be making good progress toward recovery.
The appointment of Mr G. J. Bayley, of Hawera, as Government representative on the Egmont National Park Board, in succession to the late Mr T. B. Crump, is announced in the latest Gazette.
Dr P. H. Buck, tlie well-known Maori ethnologist, who is spending a month in New Zealand before proceeding to Honolulu, left Wellington lastevening for-.the South Island.*;.He was accompanied by Mrs Buck. Father IP. Timothy, who has been connected with the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Christchurch, for 11 years, and for the past three years has acted as administrator, left on Thursday on a trip to Ireland. Father Timothy was farewelled by the president of the Athl.etic Rugby Football . Club, when the annual meeting.was held.’ • . ""Mr 'Stanley Oliver, of Wellington, has been appointed judge of the music section at the Hawera -Competition Society festival this year. Mr Oliver has had a distinguished career in musical circles in England and Canada, holding among other positions since 1917 Director of the Vocal and Choral Department, Alma College, St. Thomas, Ontario; Organist and Choirmaster, St. James United Church, (Montreal; Conductor and Director of Music, Mendelssohn Choir of Montreal; before being appointed in 1934 Conductor and Director of Music, Royal Wellington Choral Union.
The Rev. Thomas Burns Bannerman has died at the age of 69, reports the Press Association, from Invercargill. He was the son of the Rev. William Bannerman, who arrived in Otago in February. 1854. Mr T. B. Bannerman was therefore intimately connected with early Otago and Southland. For a number of years he supplied vacant charges In Southland. He ivas a -well-known, figure in nearly every Presbyterian pulpit. Latterly he started services at Georgetown and Tisbury, and until his death he carried on work there >n the Sunday school and church.
