By order-in-council and announced in the current issue of the New Zealand Gazette, fho Hawera Fire Board is granted permission to borrow the sum of £IOOO by way of bank overdraft.

The Taranaki District Officer of Health reports that during the month of February there were two cases of scarlet fever, one of enteric fever, one of pulmonary tuberculosis, one of erysipelas and one of puerperal fever in Taranaki. Since the beginning of 1935 nine cases of scarlet fever, six of enteric fever, four pulmonary tuberculosis, one of erysipelas and two of puerperal fever have been reported.

Ngaruawahia has the honour of being the birthplace of one of Now Zealand's sets of quadruplets. The children, who were all boys, were born in 1919 at Ngaruawahia to Mrs W. Hall, wife of a butter factory employee now resident at Auckland. None of the children survived beyond the first year, although they were all healthy at birth. Three contracted erysipelas when a week old and died and the fourth lived until about a year old.

A protest at the standard of carriages used on the Taranaki-Welling-ton railway service was made bv Mr. F. W. Horner at a meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night. It appeared that the passengers were being relegated tlie old stylo of carriages, he said. They were not of tlie same standard as those on the main trunk line. They were rejects from the Main Trunk, said Mr B. McCarthy. Mr. Rl. S. Allwright, stntionmaster at Hawera and a. member of the chamber, briefly referred to the improvements of recent date. New seats had been provided and the carriages reconditioned inside and outside. Mr. -Horner said that lie was going chiefly hv remarks he had heard, but the standard could bo raised to that on the Main Trunk, and it would he a big advantage.
