Mr. A. M. Mac Diarmid, Manaia, who has been on an extended holiday tour of the Waikato and North Auckland districts, returned on Saturday.

At the annual meeting of the Mar.aia Hibernian and District Sports Club, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr. A. J. Christie for his services as auditor and Mr. J. McKee, automobile association service officer, and the Red Cross Society for their assistance was passed.

On taking his scat as chairman of the Egmont National Park Board yesterday, Mr W. C. Weston (New Plymouth) was accorded a tvelcome from members. The speakers on behalf of the various committees were Messrs. W. G. Walkley (South), T. R. Anderson (East)j and F. Amoore (North).

Mr W. D. Gorham, secretary of the Wellington Woolbrokcrs’ Association, has retired after 25 years, states a Press Association message. He was the recipient of a presentation and appreciative references from the association. Mr F. H. Mullins succeeds Mr Gorham.

Mr. J. S. McKay, chairman of the Haw-era Hospital Board, and Mr. C. Harrison, managing secretary, left Hflwera by the sonth-bound Taranaki express train for Napier to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Hospital Boards’ Association. Also passengers on the train were Messrs P. E. Stainton, chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Beard, and S. Vickers, deputy-chairman, both of New Plymouth.

The funeral at Hawcra yesterday afternoon of Mr Harry Caplen, whose death occurred on Sunday, was attended by a lengthy cortege representative of a W'ide district and particularly of the old settlers. At the graveside the service was conducted by Canon D. B. Malcolm, and the Masonic service was conducted by Messrs G. H. Buckeridge and J. C. Smith. The pall-bearers were Messrs Buckeridge, Smith (St. Mary’s Church and the Masonic Lodge), H. S. Elliott, A. Coleman (legal fraternity and businessmen), Guy Livingston and G. Glenn (old settlers). Mr D. G. Smart represented the Taranaki District Law' Society and the Hawera Law 7 Society. Many beautiful floral tributes w 7 ere deposited on the casket.

Superintendent A. Morrison, of the Hawera Fire Brigade, announced his retirement from demonstrations on the occasion of the presentation of prizes at the conclusion of the National Five Brigades’ demonstrations at Blenheim on Saturday. Ho had been captain and coach of every championship at the New Zealand demonstrations since IS2I. He won with Hillside Railway twice and Hawera three times since tjiat time, and on his announcement was accorded an ovation. On the occasion of his appearing in the final event last Saturday an announcement was made that it would be his final appearance in demonstration work and the crowd and firemen alike joined in what was described as a wonderful ovation. The death occurred in the Auckland Hospital of Eric H. Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Thomas, of Kati Kati (Bay of Plenty), who, until about five months ago, w r ere residents of Fltham. The unfortunate lad, while cycling at Mount Eden, collided with a pedestrian . Both suffered concussion and were taken to the Auckland Hospital by the St. John’s Ambulance. Later in the evening, Mr. Thomas passed away. He w r as recently chosen as one of the Taranaki entrants in the Teachers’ Training College. He w 7 as a pupil of the Stratford Technical High School and had an outstanding record in both scholastic and athletic successes. Reference was made to Mr. Thomas’ death in the Eltham Presbyterian Church on Sunday by the Bev J. A. Byburn, and also at the meeting of the Salvation Army, by Adjutant Smith. The funeral will take place at Kati Kati to-morrow 7 .
