Attacked by a shark last at North Narrabeen, Herbert McFarlanc, aged 22, was so badly mangled on the right thigh , and groin that he died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. Although the shark was still swimming about, John Barrett, aged 27, of the Narrabeen Surf Club, swam out ancl brought McFarlane ashore.
