EXTRACTS FROM “HAWERA
STAR”
MARCH 2, 1885,
The Parihcka station of the A.C. Force is being abandoned. The company stationed there is to come on to Opunake, but it seems improbable that they will remain there. Their future destination, however, has not. transpired.
The band appears to be -getting on very well under tjie leadership of Mr. Hunter, the newly-appointed master. The full number is 23, about half of whom have had former experience, and these alone now form a gocyl band. The remainder are being taught at the bandmaster’s residence, and so soon as they are considered fit they will join t.he main body. More instruments have been purchased in New Plymouth at a cost of £24 odd. Some choice pieces of music are being worked up, and it is thought that when the band shortly appears in public, it will be better than ever previously. # #
The Taranaki Hospital Board has derided that patients must not have potted fish and other extras, unless they undertake to bear the cost oi such' delicacies. This is said to he in accordance with instructions from the late Colonial Secretary, who advised the board that he objected to patients being allowed delicacies unless they paid for them, as it was in opposition to the provisions of the Charitable Institutions Act. The “News,” however, does not think a pot of salmon can be brought under the heading of delicacies. K: * * * *
