MEMBERS’ ANNUAL MEETING YEAR’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED COMPETITION SUCCESSES.

A highly successful year’s activities were reviewed in tho report, presented at the annual meeting of the .Hnwehx Highland {Pipe last night. Mr C. H. Bowman presided and there was an attendance of between' 30 and 40 band and honorai-y members.

> During the year the band paraded 150 times for practices. Public functions included parades on Anzae Day, t at the Kakaramea sports, Normanb.v show, Patea sports on Boxing Day i and with the New Plymouth Cale- - donian Pipe Band on two occasions, “ Hawera Scottish Society (eight parades). The band also assisted in the ■ queen carnival by conducting dances : and raised approximately £SO for the Movie Queen SHIELD WINNERS. At the Taranaki Brass and Pipe Bands contest held at Manaia, tho band was again successful in winning the Thomson Shield for the selection for the third time in succession, and were also successful in winning the shield for the quickstep. Some of the hand members again excelled themselves in the Taranaki Caledonian sports held at- Manaia in January. In the march, under 17 years, Master D. Campbell was first and Master S. Nairn second. In the B- grade march Piper lan Cam-pibell vrjjJ fi.Vst and Piper A. Braid second and in the B grade Strathspey 1 and reel Piper I«n Campbell was first, while Pipers A. Braid and D. Campbell tied for second place. In the slow march trio the A team (Pipers R. W. Haddow, M. Bain and lan Campbell) tied with the B team (Pipers lan Campbell, D. Campbell and S. Nairn) for first place. In the drumming contest the band’s drummers (O. Quin, E. A elvin, G. Beaven and L. Trim) gained first place. In the drum-majors’ display, Drum-Major Nairn was first. At the Te Aroha sports Piper lan Campbell gained first place in the march and first in the Strathspey and reel, while Master Stuart Nairn was first in the Marden march and first in the Strathspey and reel. The annual competition for the Cruden Cup was decided by one test, and won* bv Piper M. ‘Bain, with Piper lan Campbell second and Piper D. Campbell third. During the year the band joined up with the Queen Alexander Mounted Rifles and went into camp at Waverley, where they were congratulated by the commanding officer. The band also entertained the Queen Alexander Blind to lunch after a church parade with the regiment at Hawera.

STRENGTH OF THE BAND.

The strength of the band is at present: Drum-major, 12 pipers and six drummers, with four learning the chanter. Total, 23.

The committee decided to write off £lO in depreciation, and the uniform account in the Post Office Savings Bank now stood at £261 4s 4d. It was gratifying to see that the reel classes and the dances had been well supported as they were the main source of revenue.

The annual ball was, as usual, an outstanding success. Over 700 were •present- including more than 70 guests from various pipe hands and ■Scottish societies [thremghont Taranaki. The net profit was £2B 18s Cd. During the year the bancl bid farewell to one of its presidents and. his wife, Mr and Mrs J. 8.. Laurenson. Since the formation of the band Air and Airs Laurenson had always worked hard in its interests.

In conclusion, the report thanked all who had assisted to make the year the success it had been. Special reference was made to the ladies’ committee, and to the other ladies and gentlemen who had come forward to assist with the ball. Thanks were also due to the winter show directors, the Hawera Borough Council, the honorary auditor (Mr E. K. Cameron), Air D. McCormick for the use of furniture, the Press and all honorary members for their help and to the cmployers who had shown consideration in the granting of leave to the bandsmen on many occasions. Reference was also made to the services rendered by the secretary and Drum-Ala jor J. R. Nairn. The greater part of the work fell on Air Nairn and it was through his untiring efforts that the band had achieved the success it had. Air W. G. Simpson said that the high standard set by the band in former years had certainly been maintained. The finances were in a healthy state. He congratulated the president, secretary and other officers on the manner in which they had attended to the affairs, of the band during the oast yearMr A. L. Campbell referred to the valuable tuition given to the band by Air R W. Haddow. He was sure that a great deal of the hand’s success at competitions was due to his work. He wished the band continued success.

The band had had a successful y-'ar and great credit was due, to ib.e officers, said Air .T. E. die also referred to the operations of the ladies’ committee and attributed, much of the hand’s success to their acti/i----tios. Tt was also pleasing to notice the assistance given by Hie baud to other institutions of the distr.ct. Ihe members who gave their time vere worthy of the best thanks of the community.

Simpson and A. E. Linn; Igvrid committee, Messrs A. Braid and E. Velvin; delegates to Provincial Sports

Association, Messrs Nairn and A. L. Campbell; secretary and treasurer, Mr Nairn; auditor, Mr A. K. Cameron. An honorarium of £7 7s was voted to the secretary.

During the evening the Cruden Cup was presented to Piper M. Bain by Mr Bowman. Piper Bain suitably re-

plied. Votes of thanks to the outgoing officers, the ladies’ committee and nil others who had assisted were car lied by acclamation. At the conclusion of the meeting supper was served by a ladies’ committee and the following items rendered: Songs, Miss .T. Henson and Air W. G. Simpson; elocution, the Misses Fnirwcnthcr; Highland reel, Miss D. Nairn’s pupils. Mrs L. A. Taylor was accompanist. Selections were rendered by tlve band as follow:' Quick-step test, “Floor Castle” and the selection, “Willie McKay,” “Loudan’s Bonnie Woods and Braes,” and “Malcolm McPhee.”
