CHARGE OF SHOPLIFTING
WOMAN GRANTED PROBATION PREVIOUS GOOD CHARACTER.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 1. Giving reserved decision in charges of shoplifting against Mary Hunter, aged 64, Mr. J. R- Bartholomew, b.M., said that one charge was clearly proved. He also convicted Hunter on all other charges except tw'O, stating that a heterogeneous assortment of articles found in her w'ardrobe was typical ox a shoplifter’s collection. Mr. Bartholomew said he found diificulty in dealing with a case of tins sort. Evidence had been given by reputable citizens of Hunter’s previous good character. Such an offence rea y merited a term of imprisonment, but he would be justified in admitting her to probation for one year. Hunter’s defence was that the aiticles were bought or . given her oyer a long period as she intended, opening a shop. ______
