SHIPBUILDING PROBLEMS
LITTLE NEW TONNAGE.
AID POE THE INDUSTRY.
Called Prees Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 2 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Feb. 26.
The annual report of the chamber of shipping says it is impossible for shipbuilding to prosper as long as surplus tonnage remains. Effective nationalisation by British builders had assisted the shipbuilding industry in weathering the storm, but prosperity must ultimately depend upon the revival of an economic demand for new tonnage. With the scrapping now going on, and that which may result from international action, the time would he brought nearer w r hen shipbuilding would be- restored to a healthy state in w'hich it could rely on new construction to replace marine losses, wear and tear, and the steady, moderate progress required for the expansion of trade. This would be more healthy than, sporadic bursts of activity resulting from artificial measures.
