Rider of Cuddle. « R. J. Flower is spending a short holiday at his homo in Hawora. He states that ‘Sunny Maid may possibly accompany Cuddle on her Australian trip, which is to be immediately after the Wellington meeting next -month. Flower will also go and will do the riding on the trip. With fifteen wins to his credit, he is having a most successful season. He will be riding at the Opunake meeting on Wednesday. Nightly’s Trip Off. ■k southern report states that it is by no means likely that Nightly will fulfil his Australian engagements, but will remain in New Zealand and will be seen out at the forthcoming Wellington and ManaWatu fixtures, with the Thompson Handicap and the Awapuni Gold Cup as his main objectives. His presence will add greatly to the interest displayed in these events. Cereal Fit. Cereal worked very pleasingly half a mile yesterday' morning to finish three-quarters of a length in front of Gold Gleam over half a mile on the trial grass in 50 2-ssec.. Ho hit out very freely and promises to strip in the pink of condition on Wednesday. He is the local favourite for the Opunake Cup and as tfie field is not a strong one his prospects must be regarded as particularly bright. Rulanut Entered. When the name of Rulanut appeared amongst the list of entries for the Wanganui and Egmont mceitngs his nomination evoked considerable interest, but he did not full his engagements. Rulanut has again been nominated, this time for the approaching Rangitikei meeting, and it is to be hoped that the handsome chestnut horse puts in an appearance. Owner of Commendation. It is pleasing to note that the president of the Woodvillc Jockey Club will be strongly represented at the club’s meeting to-day, and with a trio like Heritage, King’s Lancer and Secrecy to represent liini nt least one success should come his way. Although Heiitage is in the stable of F. W. Davis, both King’s Lancer and Secrecy arc trained by Mr Gaisford himself, who has done remarkably well with this pair during the past few weeks. A few years ago his popular livery of French grej', with royal blue sleeves, earned great prominence through the deeds of that great galloper Commendation, but he has raced little of note since.

Staged Come-back. p. Kelly, formerly a leading Melbourne jockey, retired to become a trainer. He recently took out a jockey’s license again, and landed his first mount a winner. It was his first race ride for over two years. Kelly's successes in years gone by included the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap of 1922 on Rostrum and the Williamstown Cup of 191(3 on Wishing Cap.

Ranelagh Retires. Ranclagli has been thrown out of work and he is not likely to Taec again. He did his share as he started 151 times. He won 22 races, was second 21 times, and third on 16 occasions. In stakes he earned 3461. Ranelagh, now eight years old, was bred by Mr N. Rutherford, being by Arrowsmith from Chukka, by Nassau from Garstou, by Birkenhead from Lullaby, a daughter of imported Hammock. A Writ. In a writ issued out of the Supreme Court, Sydney, Alexander Byers is claiming £2200 damages from the Queensland Turf Club cn the grounds of alleged assault and defamation, following his alleged exclusion from the Ascot (Brisbane) racecourse. In the Supreme Court Mr Justice Webb granted an application to have C. A. Morris, barrister-at-law and chairman of the Q.T.C. appointed to be sued on behalf of himself and other members of the Q.T.C.

Valpeen in Light Work. Although Valpeen has not been on the Matamata track since New Year he is being given light work on his owner’s private T,rack at Okoroirc, and he is ready to be wound up at any time. His owner, Mr C. Campbell, is also schooling Prince Val. This horse is flightlv at his jumps and it looks as though it will be some time before he becomes proficient.

May Make Amends. Lady Ruler has not raced since the Auckland summer meeting, but reports from To Awamutu indicate that she is doing good work there, and she should l>e in nice order to fulfil her engagements at the To Aroha meeting. On Boxing Day she-won the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslic brilliantly, but was

bcaten into fourth place in the Sylvia Park Handicap on the concluding day. However, the going was soft on that occasion, and with a firm track on Saturday she should make amends for that defeat. Her Turn is Due. Sirona is stated to be doing well at To Rapa, and it should not be long before she reaches the winning list. At the Thames meeting she was beaten over six furlongs by Coronis, and the same horse beat her again over seven furlongs at the recent Takapuna meeting. Sirona is engaged in the Waihou Handicap, the open sprint on the first day of the Te Aroha meeting, and the Hot Springs Handicap, one mile, and if reserved for the latter event should be in the money.
