WANGANUI WOOL SALE

RULING PRICES MAINTAINED CONTINENT BIDS STRONGLY COARSE WOOLS IMPROVE. ■ A catalogue of 15,242 hales was offered to a full bench of buyers at the second AVanganui wool sale of the curl rent season which commenced last night. AYith the exception of iambs’ wool, which was decidedly easier, jirices were firm on ruling market values. Early brokers’ reports indicated that in some instances, medium and coarse wools showed a slight; improvement on the last sale. Continental bidding was more noticeable than usual, and Bradford was in the market for its quota of wools suited to the British trade. The bulk of the good to medium crossbred wool went to that quarter, and the slight filip in Continental bidding resulted in bush wools showing prices fully firm and, m some cases, better than were anticipated. The sale was assisted by fairly strong competition from local mills and scourers, who were in the iharkct for types suitable to their requirements. There was a very limited demand for lambs wool, however, and the bulk of that offering was neglected. Germany was in the market to a more pronounced extent than has been usual in the recent round of sales, and competition from that quarter was distinctly pleasing. Canada and Japan bought freely and France’s influence on the trend of prices for the better sorts of hollies and pieces was very noticeable. Belgium and Italy were in the market to some extent.

All sections of the trade were governed by fairly rigid limits, however, and it was the general opinion of those closely in touch with values, that there would bn little change in prices between now and the end of the season.

REPORTS OF BROKERS. Reports have been submitted by brokers as follow : FARMERS’ CO-OP. SOCIETY The Farmers* Co-operative Organisation Society of New Zealand, Ltd., report that bidding was fairly brisk and animated from all sections of the benches. As compared with our last sale in January, prices were on a par for fine and medium wools, coarser sorts showing an appreciation of a farthing to a, halfpenny per lb. Lambs’ wool was irregular. Our catalogue comprised 1400 bales, 90 per cent, of which was sold.

LOAN AND MERCANTILE New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reported that their quota was 2802 bales. Lambs wool, of which there was a fair entry, sold at late rates for the better lots, but for anything off colour, shabby and seedy, prices were inclined to bo erratic. Our best price was secured for five bales Corriedale, branded ST. ANDREWS, which realised 11-Jd and was secured by the Wanganui Woollen Mills, and four bales Corriedale lambs of the same brand making lOd were secured also by the Wanganui Woollen Mills. LEVIN AND COMPANY

The wool generally was not bright and lacked fullness of stajpjci and healthy lustre, states Messrs Levin and Co. We had a very good clearance, passing in only 374 bales, which included two large clips with fairly high reserves. As compared with the January sale there are the following changes to record :

46/48’s, average, Jd to Jd advance. 44/46’s, average, id to id advance. 40/44’s, average, id advance. Lambs’ wool, par to Id decline. Seedy wools were hard to quit. Southdown, par to id advance.
