WORST STORM IN MEMORY
Ship’s Battle in Hurricane Off North Australian Coast
HUGE WAVES SWAMP DECKS CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE (.United Press association— By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received noon to-day. DARWIN, To-day. The worst storm in the memory ol all officers was experienced off the coast of the northern territory by the Burns Philip steamer, Marella, which arrived at Darwin last evening two days overdue from Southern States. Wind blew with hurricane force all day on Tuesday and huge seas swept over the ship, smashing windows and doors and damaging cargo. The second engineer, Mi- Renfrew, was swept along the deck by a wave and suffered severe head injuries. He was admitted to the’hospital on the arrival of the ship at Darwin.
A number of passengers received minor injuries. The Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, nai - r rowly escaped being washed overboard. A passenger said the ship was hove to all day on Tuesday. Further passengers were thrown off their feet, and mountainous seas came over, flooding the cabins.
Captain Donaldson said tlijit the winds and seas were the worst he had experienced.
