When the agents wore surrounding the house in which the suspect had taken refuge they were greeted with machinegun fire and a six hours’ machine-gun battle ensued.

Three men were killed and three wounded in an Illinois town when bank bandits and vigilantes fought a gun battle during an attempted bank holdup. The bank had once before been looted and the citizens took elaborate precautions against a repetition. Upon the discovery of the bandits in the bank this morning a pitched battle was fought, the sheriff, the cashier and a bandit l>eing killed. One bandit turned a machine-gun on to himself to avoid capture, while another bandit was seriously wounded and taken prisoner.
