SHOWS TO CONTINUE

ELTHAM HORTICULTURAL, SOCIETY. LACK OF INTEREST DEPLORED At a special meeting of the Elthani Horticultural Society last night, the question whether the organisation should suspend operations or continue to hold shews was considered, it being decided to hold a show early in February. The meeting was the outcome of a motion by Mr. Rl. J. Peppered that the society go into recess, as the last Spring Show had resulted in a Joss of £-5. Mr. 1.. J. Bridger was in the chair.

In speaking to his motion, Mr. Peppered suggested that the society should go into recess for three years, saying that when a meeting was called to arrange the summer show there were only three growers present and these were spring exhibitors. He felt that if people wanted a summer show they .should come along and give a hand. He would like to see the show hekl and he would be prepared to assist.

The chairman said that the difficulty of this season’s summer show should not enter into consideration of going into recess.

The fear that if the society went into recess it would be a difficult matter to resuscitate it was expressed by Mrs. D. Syme. She thought it would be possible to hold a most successful show, as the flowers and vegetables were excellent this year. The chairman was in agreement that to go into recess would be a retrogado step and mentioned that once before it took several years to revive the society. He hoped members would agree to continue. The show attracted people from all arount and it would be a pity if it were dropped. . He hoped members would do something to carry oil

Mr. K. Tarrant said the exhibits had always ccme forward well, but the public had not attended. It was necessary to stage another show to attract the people. They did not come to see the flower show.

It was creditable that sueli splendid shows had been held for a number of years, and it would be a mistake to drop out, stated Mr. R. Lewis. He result that they had not sufficient thought a mistake had been made in reducing the membership fee, with the money to work on.

Mi\ Peppereil did not want to see the show closed, but lie did want to see people take an interest in them. He would do liis own share of the work but he was not going to do the other fellow’s share as well. If members felt confident they could run, a show successfully, he would be prepared to withdraw, otherwise he would like to see a vote taken.

It Avas finally agreeqd that Mr. Peppered withdraw, his motion and plans for the summer show AA'ere then considered. It Avas decided to. hold this as usual and the secretary Avas instructed to see if the second Wednesday in February AA'ere a\'ailable. All present were appointed a committee to run this year’s summer show. A special sub-committee of Messrs Barnard and PoAve and Mrs. Syme Avas appointed to draw up a schedule.
