WAIMATE WEST COUNTY

COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING. FURTHER ROAD TALLY. A further tally of traffic on roads in the Waimate West County area will be taken this month as the result of a decision at a meeting of the council at Manaia to-day. A request for tho tally from January 25 to January 31 was made by the district highways council, which stated that the tally points and the shifts would be the same as previously. Labour under the Unemployment Board’s No. 5 scheme will be utilised.

Those present were Councillors E. Long (chairman), F. Mourie, J. Leslie, J. S. McKay, H. Buxton, S. H. lo Fleming and the county clerk (Mr V H. Hobday). The engineer (Mr J. A. Hansen) reported that most of the staff during the month had principally been occupied upon main highways. Over one hundred chains of tile Sheet- Road had been resurfaced and the balance thoroughly patched. About (JO chains on the Manaia Road had been resurfaced and the balance repaired. The staff was at present sealing 60 chains on the lower end of the Rowan Road. Maintenance work had been carried out along the Sheet, Rama, Rowan and Main South Roads. The Rama Road drain would be cleaned out. The supply of bitumen was nearly finished and additional supplies would be necessary to complete the season’s work. The ranger (Mr W. O. Duncan) reported that he had impounded 47 head of cattle and seven horses during the past 12 months. He had experienced considerable trouble over wandering cows at Riverdale. Inaha and Otakeho. At Otakeho there were 20 between four owners. The cattle annoyed other farmers by breaking down fences.

Councillors were adamant that stock should not wander on the roads, especially at night time. The seriousness of the position was stressed and the possibility of prosecution was mentioned if stock were not kept from the roads.

February 23 was fixed as the, date after which a penalty will he inflicted for non-payment of rates. The chairman, clerk, engineer and Crs. Mourie and McKay were appointed a committee to make arrangements for the annual picnic of councillors, employees and staff.
