Clear Cut Saar Decision Removes all Apprehension
LEAGUE’S TASK SIMPLIFIED
COMMENTS IN ENGLAND (British Official Wireless.} Received 1 p.m. to-day. RUGBY, Jan. IG. A general sense of relief that the Saar voting passed off without serious disturbance and was of such a decisive nature as to simplify the task of the League Council is reflected in all British newspapers. In the comments the hope is expressed that the Saarlanders will continue to display discipline and calm during the period of waiting, which is inevitable in order to permit the technical tasks of the transfer to be completed in good order, and that the League Council will curtail that period to the shortest time practicable. As to the wider considerations, the view is expressed that the clearcut decision removes a thorn which might have inflamed all Europe. Herr Hitler’s statement that a decisive step had been taken towards a gradual reconciliation, and that the Germans would not withhold themselves from the task necessary for “the genuine solidarity of nations, ’ ’ is coupled with that of M. Flandin that Franco-German relations would “progressively improve with collaboration in European peace as their goal and the hope is expressed that further progress towards European pacification will be possible. English newspapers naturally also give prominence to the appreciative remarks made by both French and German newspapers on the tact and good temper shown by the international force in the Saar. A new, important stage in the programme of European appeasement will be the conversations of the French and British Ministers in London. The newspapers do not anticipate that these will lead at once to concrete results, but will be rather in the nature of a full, free discussion, directed to discover on what basis it will be possible to go forward.
