SCIENCE CONGRESS
OPENING AT MELBOURNE NEXT SESSION AT AUCKLAND United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph Copyright). MELOURNE, Jan. 17. There were informal preliminary proceedings only at the opening of the science congress. One of the earliest decisions was to hold the next congress in January, 1937, at Auckland. Sir David Rivett, chief executive officer of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, was elected president, succeeding Sir Douglas Mawson. The delegates were welcomed by the Lord Mayor. ~ “This is to be a very active congress, said Sir Douglas. “Our object is to develop and preserve their inheritance, and give the public an oportunity to realise that science is worth while.” Sir Douglas Mawson’s address tonight was mainly historical. He traced Antarctic exploration from the earliest times. After dealing with whaling and mineral wealth in the Antarctic, Sir Douglas suggested that the Government of Australia should take early steps to develop and preserve their inheritance. Since 1905, 300,000 whales valued at £70,000,000 had been taken. He suggested that before long operations would be eenducted there on the lines of the Hudson Bay Company. He saw no reason to delay the dispatch of modern pleasure summer cruises among the pack ice.
