AIR LINER’S FORCED LANDING

TWO MISHAPS NEAR DARWIN MAILS TWO DAYS LATE (United Prep* Association—Bv Electric Telegraph Copyright.) DARWIN, Jan. 16The Imperial Airways air liner Athena, bringing Empire air mails, ran into a storm overnight and was blown far off the course when attempting a night flight from Koepang to Darwin. The pilot wirelessed distress messages, which were picked up at Darwin saying: “I believe I am lost. Petrol almost exhausted.” Finally he was forced to land at Point Stuart, 60 miles east of Darwin. T lie machine was not damaged. A Quantas plane immediately began a search and located the Athena early this morning, but the Quantas plane damaged its propeller when landing. It then transferred its petrol to the Athena, which completed the journey to Darwin. The mails were nearly two days late, mainly owing to a mishap at Karachi.
