DUCHESS MARA

Wins England’s Heart From Our London Correspondent. (By Air Mail). LONDON, Dec. 29. There are many in England who believe that the Duke of Kent, atter his honeymoon, which is likely to be prolonged by travel abroad, will be asked to accept a Dominion GovernorGeneralship. Australia, of course, in addition to South Africa and Canada,is freely mentioned. There is no question that the new Royal Duchess has won England’s heart. At her first public appearance in London this week, at Wyndham’s Theatre, enormous crowds blocked the West End. She was accompanied by the Queen and the Duke. The Queen, wearing a cloak of electric blue velvet, with a high fur collar and a necklace of diamonds, appeared first in the Royal box. A storm of applause greeted her, and this was redoubled when, in obedience to a gesture by Her Majesty, the Duchess, dressed in pale pink, with a sash pinned at her shoulder with the diamond brooch given her by the Queen on her wedding day, came forward. ' For sevoral moments the Duchess stood shyly smiling and bowing to the crowded audience with the Duke of Kent at her side. It was revealed that ller Majesty calls the Duchess by the pet name of “Mara.” When the Duke welcomed Princess Marina at Dover before the wedding he addressed her by that name, and when walking along the cor T ridor of the theatre the Queen was heard to address her daughter-in-law as “Mara.”
