Steps to Relieve the Position of Shipowners LESS TONNAGE LAID UP ELIMINATING SURPLUS (Unite,! Press Association— By Electric Telegraph Copyngnu. Received 10.30 a.m to-day. LONDON, Sept. 18. The hope that steps now being taken to relieve the difficulties of shipowners will soon bring a return of a reasonable measure of prosperity to merchant shipping, is expressed in the report of Lloyd’s Register for the year ended Jun© 6. It says that the world tonnage laid up at the present time was eight millions, compared with twelve millions last, year, and fifteen millions two years ago. A total of 2,700,000 tons was isold for breaking up’ and 289,000 tons were lost, .with the result tha’t the world tonnage was now 65,000,000 compared with .70,000,000 in 1931.
The total still exceeds the demand in the freight market, but the gradual elimination of surplus vessels opens up a more hopeful vista for shipowners. 1 ■
