HAWERA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WALKLEY BEATS O’CALLAGHAN

The Hawera men’s golf champion-, ships were advanced a. further stage at the Fairfield links in Hawera during the week-end when 'some fine play was seen, especially in the senior event in which Tarrant had an unimpeachable stroke round of 74. Although he beat O. O. Pratt, W. O’Callagban lost to W. 'G. Walkley who played strongly throughout the day. Results in the four events were as follow:

Senior championship, first round: W. o»’Callaghan beat C. O. Pratt at the 20tli, R. Su Ward beat McDonald at the I9th. Second round : W. G. Walkley beat G’Oallaghan 2 up, Ward beat C. Harrison 2 and 1, J. Tarrant beat R. S. Simpson 5 and 4, G. S. Fry beat D. C. Ryan 5 and 4. Intermediate, first round: G. Dalgetty beat W. J. Bright by default, A. W. Lawn beat O. K. Tennent 4 and 0. Second round: L. Ritchie beat A. W. Lawn 2 and 1, Rl. C. Jordan beat Ei. W. Snowsill 4 and 3, W. McAnerin beat Dingle 1 up. Junior: J. Cl. Robb beat L. J. Bull 6 and 5. Limit: G. T, Lloyd beat T. P. McLean 3 and 1.

SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND

Conditions at Waiwakaiho on Saturday for the second qualifying round of the. New Plymouth men’s championship were rendered somewhat difficult by a strong southerly wind. G. M. Chong and F. D l . Johns, each with 83, returned the best cards. The first round leaders failed to reproduce their form of the previous week and Chong and Hassell led the qualifiers with totals of 164 for the 36 holes.

The following were the best cards returned in the medal handicaps held in conjunction with the second qualifying round :

OASTLHCLIFF' CLUB VISITED

Members of the Patea women’s club on Friday visited Gastleeliff and in a friendly” game lost by five games to seven. Results were as follow, the names of the Patea players being mentioned first: Miss Rourke lost to Mrs Dean. Miss Harris won from Miss Bonner. Miss Gilligan lost to Mrs Smith. Mrs Glenhy lost to Mrs Bristol. Mrs Harris lost to Mrs J. C. Brown. Mrs Sheahan lost to Miss Dtean. Mrs Crompton won from Mrs Braid. Mrs Wither won from Mrs Jones. Miss Hemingway won from Mrs Newham.

Miss Petersen won from Mrs Wagstaff. Mrs Mitchell lost to Miss Scoullar. Miss Davidson lost to Mrs Achison.

In the Patea. club’s junior championship Mrs T. E. Roberts defeated Miss Q’Sulilvan.

PLAY AT ELTHAM. CLUB TROPHIES CONTESTED. In the Sylvia Bowl contest at Mtham at the week-end Mrs M. MeGarry and Mrs R. Tayler, each with 145, tied and a play-off will be held to decide the winner. The second round was played on Saturday, the best net scores for the two rounds being: Mrs MeGarry 145, Mrs Tayler 145, Mrs de Launay 148, Miss Fountaine 140, Mrs Casey ISO, Mrs L. Quin 151, Miss T. Gibson 153, Miss M. Gibson 153, Mrs Morton, 154,' Mrs J. Quin 165, Mrs Stanners 156, Miss Carncross 156.

Mr J. D. McKay’s trophy for the best score in the second round was won by Miss P. Fountaine with 00 — 17—73.

In the semi-final of the women’s senior championship Mrs Casey beat Mrs Morton and Mrs L. Quin beat Mrs Wells. Mrs Casey and Mrs Quin will meet in the final.

In the junior championship Mrs MeGarry beat Miss Ritter by default.
