NEW ZEALAND COINAGE

DISCUSSION OF DESIGNS. NUMISMATIC SOCIETY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 30. The designs on the New . Zealand coins- were discussed and. criticised at a. meeting of the New Zealand Numismatic Society. The general opinion was that the -designs were -distinctive and attractive, though it was stated the attitude of the Maori depicted on the shilling might have .been less warlike.

Discussing the threepenny bit, Mr Johannes Andersen said that patus or carved meres had been likened to “ginger beer bottles,” (but only -by those who did not know what they were. Ignorance of the characteristics of the country in which they lived did not give weight to the criticisms of such people. In relation to the legend, however, the patus were upside down or else the thongs should be . made to hang downwards or -be otherwise treated. This, was a minor matter, which could be corrected in any future mintings. _ It is understood that arrangements in connection with the design of the Waitangi crown are now being finalised and that there is no immediate intention to issue a penny and halfpenny to complete the New Zealand series.
