i WOMEN’S DIVISION. L ANNUAL MEETING HELD. > x (From Our Own Correspondent). I Tell annual meeting of the district . branch of the Women’s Division of the - Farmers’ Union was held in the Awatuna Hall. Mrs M. Bourke presided, over an attendance of 20 members and read a report of the year’s activities. The report stated that there had been ten meetings with an average attendance of 19 members. Demonstrations included brass work, sea-grass, tapestry and paper mache work and competitions for the 'best cheese dish, scones and six blooms were arranged as well as several lectures by the Red Cross nurse. Three members had not missed a meeting during the year, " namely, Mesdames Cray (Makaka), t Coxhead (Te Kiri) and Boyd (AwaThe secretary, Mrs W. P. Hughes, 1 read the balance-sheet, showing a I small credit balance. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. * . . .. Mrs. D. A. Hughes (vice-president) 1 presented the president and secretary - with a bouquet each as a mark of appreciation of their work and the t esteem in which they were held. Mrs Bourke said she would like very l much to be relieved of her duties, as j president. She had held the office for nearly five years and she thought it advisable to have a. change. At the wish of the meeting, however, Mrs Bourke consented to nomination and she was re-elected unopposed . Mrs Hughe® was unanimously reelected as hon. secretary. Mesdames Gray (Makaka), Gargan (Riverlea) and Barker junr. and Boyd (Awatuna) were elected vice-presidents and Mesdames Bankhead, Smith, Farquhar junr. and Coxhead were appointed a committee to help arrange meetings and demonstrations. The president and secretary were re-appointed advisory members and also delegates to the next exe--1 cutive meeting in Hawera. A competition in estimating the weight of a “wonder” lemon, grown by Mrs Bourke, was won by Mrs Farquhar senr., whose estimate was IJlb., the correct weight being lib. 9Joz. It was decided to apply for 10ft. space at the South Taranaki Winter . Show. ____ Mrs Benton (president of the Auroa branch) congratulated the Awatuna-Te Kiri branch on having such a good president and secretary; also the members on their attendance and interest. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Corbett, Alty and Bailey. Hostess for the next meeting will be Mesdames Gargan, Lavell and South- ’ ern, of Riverlea. TENNIS MATCH. . The return tennis match! between the Gaonui and Mangahume clubs was ; ' played' at Mangahume on Saturday in I beautiful. weather. Owing to the fa-il-j ing light the last few sets had to r be curtailed to four instead of six games. 1 The results were very close, three sets 3 being decided by the last stroke. The . visitors were the winners by nine sets 3 (74 games) to seven sets. (70 games). Another friendly contest will be played with Awatuna next Saturday. BASKETBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the Ladies’ Basketball Club was held at Te Kiri last week. Miss A. McLellan was re-elected captain and Mrs K. Henderson was elected secretary. It was decided to ask Mr gangster to again act as coach to the team. The selecting of A and B team® was left to the captain, secretary and !coach. The membership fee was fixed at 2s. i A working bee was held in the doj main to prepare the field and the first practice took place last week. DOMAIN AN© HALL. A meeting of the Punehu Domain Board took place in the Te Kiri Hall on Saturday. Mr E. A. Collins presided and the others present were Messrs J. Templeton, R. O. Watson, T. J. Coxhead, J. J. Horgan, Ri. Tindle and S. W. Beer (secretary). As the Domain Board includes the hall guarantors the 'business also embraced hall affairs. It was the feeling of the meeting that a hall caretaker should be appointed. It wag stated that the domain was showing a considerable credit balance and the hall a debit and it was recommended that some of the domain funds be used for the hall which is built in the domain. A working bee is to be held shortly and Messrs. Collins and Beer© were appointed to ascertain what material was required for gates and fences. PRESBYTERIAN SERVICE. The Rev. E. Swinerd, who was’ , relieving minister for the Presbyterian Church some time ago, is again visiting the district, and took the service last Sunday. There was a good congregation. The speaker based his remarks on “The New: Birth.” He also | sang a solo entitled “So Near to the \ Kingdom.” The Rev. Si. J. Webb presided at the organ. Mr. Swinerd is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Templeton, “Templemore.” He will celebrate his 81st birthday next month. PERSONAL AN© GENERAL. Mr J. Ewart has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. J l . Ewart spent Easter, week with relatives in Auckland, where she attended the golf tournament. Mr. F. Tindle is indisposed. Mr C. Cheffings, one of whose hands was amputated as the result of an accident, is. in New Plymouth hospital. Mr. A l . F. Watson is indisposed. The measles epidemic is still preventing a number of children from attending school. Mis Taylor entertained friends during the holidays. Mrs F. Miles is a patient in the New Plymouth hospital and her daughter Doris was also taken there last week. Little Colin Wemys s is suffering from pneumonia, following the measles. The social committee of the Anglican Church has decided to hold a euchre and dance social on Friday next. Mr. J. Huwiler, of Eltham, who was for many years a respected settler in the Te Kiri district, i s reported to i be seriously ill. Mr and Mrs Geo. Parkes celebrated their golden wedding last week. A large number of friends and relatives* were present to offer congratulations. Messrs. G. Frost and G. Sayed spoke in appropriate terms of fhe sterling qaulitiesi of Mr and Mnsi Parkes.. Mr A. Rait is taking a course at Massey College. Mr, R. W. Clements* (manager of the Taungatara factory) is indisposed. Mrs F. Miles, has: returned from; hospital.
