Rae, principal of the Auckland Training College, by tl;e Education Department to enable him to take advantage of the offer of a travelling scholarship of 2000 dollars by the Carnegie Corporation to study' educational methods in the United States and Great Britain. Mr Rae will leave by the Aorangi for Vancouver on Mar 1. He will spent, about six weeks in the United States and wil] then go to England and latei to the- Continent. He will return to Auckland at the end of the year. A former application for leave on full sala-rv was declined, the department stating that leave could be taken without salary. However, pendmo- the re-opening of the Auckland Training College, Mr Rae was allotted inspectorial duties in the Auckland education district. DEPARTMENT CRITICISED AUCKLAND, April 11. The Auckland Education Board today again criticised the Education Department for refusing to allow Mr D. M. Rue, principal of the Training College, to leaive on full salary while absent abroad under a Carnegie Scholarship offer. Mr Rae in a letter said that lie had now applied for.eight months’ leave on half 5a1ary......... The chairman, Mr Wells, said lie had discussed Mr Rue’s original request with the Director of Education, but could do nothing, as the Cabinet had decided that no highly paid officer should be given leave of absence on salary. He thought it deplorable that a mail of Mr Rue's qualifications who had done so much for education, should not be able to take advantage of the scholarship offer. To ask him to pay his own .expenses was asking too much. The hoard decided to support Mr Riao’s present application.
