Although he has 'been, discharged from Auckland Hospital for several months, Constable Stewart, of the Newton Police Station, has not yet recovered from the serious injuries he received in attempting to arrest a motor-ear thief at Grey Lynn last September. He has not been able to resume duty, and is confined to his home. The fractured bone in his leg lias not knitted, and Mr Stewart is still unable to use crutches. The circumstances under which his injuries were caused aroused much indignation against the offender, while there was general recognition of the ■bravery of the officer, who received praise from all parts of New Zealand. He leapt on to the running board of a stolen car, 'but the thief apparently drove deliberately into a stationary vehicle and succeeded in dislodging the constable.
