SHIPPING INQUIRY URGED
PLIGHT IN BRITISH SERVICE. PETITION TO WESTMINSTER. (United Pre»s Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, Nov. 30. A petition on behalf of officers of the merchant fleet was taken to Westminster from the Tower Bridge aboard the decorated tug Britannia. It contains the signatures of 12,000 officers and 10,000 members of the public and demands an inquiry into the pay and conditions of service on merchant ships. The tug, throughout the voyage, was greeted with fog horns, all river craft crews lining up and cheering. The petition was taken to the House of Commons from Westminster Pier Moore and Brabazon. The petitioners and presented by Mr. P. J. H. Hannon and Colonel J. T. Moore-Brabazon. The petitioners complain that most foreign officers are higher paid than the British and many British ships are manned entirely .by foreigners, though 3000 British officers and 40,000 seamen are unemployed.
