Air Dickie said his part was just to introduce the Minister gnd to welcome him on this, his -first official visit, to Hawera. He congratulated the show executive on the display and also specially on the great success of the “drive” for finance, which had put the society in a healthy position and showed the public spirit of the community —a wonderful result achieved in spite of the depression. The society wa-s now in a very happy position to go iahead with its work. The Alayor said that it was his privilege to give a civio welcome to the Alin-ister and he- thanked him on behalf otf the citizens, for he knew it was a sacrifice to leave - his duties in Wellington at such a time as this. This was a red letter day for Hawera and district and marked substantial progress. All were proud of the society and proud of the town and district and were pleased to see the Alanister present with them at the show and at this presentation ceremony.
THE MINISTER’S SPEECH The Minister said the show had been an inspiration and proved the very great productivity of the district.. He urged all farmers to aim at the highest quality m their primary produce, so as to make it supreme and superior to everything else in the world. Then, despite quotas and other troubles, by. giving trie people at Home what they wanted they would always have a- good and sure market. Mr Ransom said that there had been a vast increase in production in every district by means of intensive fanning, and there were many signs of an improvement in the general position. If the quality of the primary produce was maintained there would always lie a demand at Home. There had been satisfactory increases in deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank and an increase in confidence by investors, while there had been improvements in wool, fa.t lamb and dairy markets as coinpared with last year. He felt sure they were 'beginning to look back on the depression, and forward to a period of prosperity. In conclusion, he expressed his pleasure at being associated with the show and the association aiid to know of the generosity of the mortgagee in respect of the ground' fund and tfee response of the people generally. He wished the society continued and increasing prosperity in the future. / The trophies were then presented by the Minister, the list being as follows;
