Both stands were filled to "capacity shortly after midday, while thousands lined the rails about the ring. The grand parade of prizewinners in all livestock sections was one of the principal attractions, hut there followed .some of the most spectacular events of the show, including jumping competitions, steer riding, military exhibitions and Highland dancing, and keen public interest, was held throughout the afternoon. A comparison of the gate receipts for the first and second days of the show for five years' is as follows: Ist day. 2nd day. The judging of boys and girls’ calf club championships occupied this morning at the show, and drew a fair public attendance. This afternoon’s features included novelty pony competitions, parade of cadets, folk dancing by pupils of the Hawera Technical School, motor oar events, a Maori entertainment and boys’ tug-o’-war. The show will conclude this evening with a gymnastic exhibition and a grand fireworks display. The giand parade yesterday afternoon was probably tiie most outstanding in the history of the show and was an impressive array of magnificent stock. Headed by the Hawera Pipe Band, under Brum Major J. Nairn, the cattle, horses and ponies in a long-and imposing line, slowly wound their~way round the ring and gradually narrowing the circle they formed up in array iii front of the members’ stand. First came the calves and their young owners, and then in succession the Jerseys, Ayrshires, Frie sians and Milking Shorthorns, each lea by the champion, bulls and cows. Then followed the fine array of OJycksdales, hacks, hunters and ponies with theii riders. The procession ended in a line of farm horses and drays, and smart prig turn-outs. The whole parade was under the direction of the marshall, Mr T. A. Winks, assisted by several mounted stewards and their management was most creditable. For fully three hours yesterday afternoon public interest was centred in the riiio- and after the grand parade with its magnificent display of prize winning stock, resplendent in ribbons and coloured award tickets, came the steer riding! Plunging and kicking, the beasts endeavoured vainly to dislodge their riders who clung to their wild mounts like leeches. Excitement and thrills thpre were in plenty, and both riders and beasts gave sensational exhibitions. Hearty * laughtei greeted the somewhat spectacular falls of riders whose mounts proved unmanageable- and whose escape wa; made either in a sudden dive or hi a roll 'or sideslip. Tor the rider who was able to master his mount, however, there was unstinted applause from the huge crowd which packed tin stands and lined the fences of the enclosure.
Lady stewards of past years were entertained by the society at afternoon tea yesterday and a very happy time was * spent. Amongst those present were Mrs Aloore Hunter, Airs Robert Tait, Mrs J. R. Corrigan. Mrs J. S. Young, Mrs W. A. O’Callaghan, Miss Caolen and Miss Sutton.
