An exciting experience befell a party of Surfdalie residents when fire broke out" in a launch in which they iv/I e travelling to Auckland. In putting out the flames Mr C. Thornton, storekeeper, of Surfdale, and Mr S. Tapper, received burns. A fault in the carburetter pipe caused petrol to ignite. Mr Tapper was trapped by the flames, but dashed through a wall of fire and turned off the petrol. He and Mr Thornton then threw several coats over_th» flames and also emptied several buckets of water over the fire. They were both exhausted when the fire was extinguished. A : coastal steamer picked up the occupants of the launch and towed the damaged vessel to port. -
