LOAN AND MERCANTILE

FAT SHEEP IN KEEN DEMAND. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports : Fat- sheep prices remain practically on last week’s level as far as ewes are concerned, but it is not expected these prices will remain much longer, as supplies are rapidly becoming more plentiful. Lambs are now being drafted and sent away to catch the Christmas trade in England, and prices being paid are very satisfactory. Fat cattle prices’ remain as for last week, with little variation. Supplies are becoming more plentiful. A keen demand is evident for all classes of fat sheep. Breeding ewes have been sold in large numbers for forward delivery at from 14s to 16s for 5-year-old, and up to 18s for 4-vear-olds. Ewes with 100 per cent of lambs have been sold at up to 30s. Store wethers are very scare and are badly wanted.

Owing to the plenitude of feed store cattle are in keen demand, and any good lines are quickly snapped up at prices that, will not "leave much margin between fat and store prices. The Fordell sale on Thursday drew an excellent varding and prices wore on a nar with the last sale.

Yearling heifers have slumped a little in price, and are probably 10s a head lower than a month agi>. Demand i.s not very keen, and there is no outside inquiry. The demand for dairy heifers and cows is practically finished, and ruling prices are consequently low. For pigs a keen demand is still evident.. particularly for weaners. Private sales during the week have been: Five-year ewes to 16s, yearling heifers to £3 ]f)s, pedigree Ayrshire b”lls to £l2. Shorthorn bulls to £6 10s, dairy heifers £4 10s to £5 10s, dairy cows to £5 10s, stud Southdown, ram s to 25 guineas', fat ewes (shorn) i to 15s, woolly m.s. hoggets 17s 6d to 18s 6d.
