MEN IN REGULAR. WORK
CHR ISTOHU ROH ALLEGATIONS
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 2. Cases where men in regular work, drawing wages up to £5 a week, are receiving assistance from relief depots are being inquired into. The question was raised at a meeting of the Citizens’ Unemployment Relief Committee, and in view of the fact that inquiries were in hand it was not carried further. Mr W. W. Scarff said that five city council employees had received goods I from the. depot. Mr It. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Bureau, said in that case it was obvious that the production of form U.B. 25 was not insisted on. Mr J. W. Beanland, chairman of the works committee of the city council, stated that the committee knew of one case in which a man had l been reprimanded. The city council would welcome a report on any cases where it was known definitely that their employees were taking advantage of the scheme. Hearsay was of no assistance to the council. ‘‘l think it is a scandal if anything like this is going on,” he said. The chairman stated that he thought the committee could leave the discussion there in the meantime.
