OURiIENT ctitMMENT (By ‘ ‘Lilli ited. ’’) With Cairfex and Whbfiiuftkuih already at Auckland and Havering, Aga Klifih and Djiaglano also engaged .Hawera will be weill .represented at the Auckland Rfieing Club's spring Uieeting, .which commeiideb on Saturday next. Havering is booked! to leave to-day .and O. Ji«ickiiqn’i» pah-, Aga Khan and Diagano, leaVe td-mdrrow. HaVering is riiueh improved as a result df his race fit Waverley find on Satiiidifiy shaped welt in a gailiip over a ifail’e, running out the distance in 1.44 Althdugh hot at his best yet; Hfivering is Making rapid .improvement andi. Will isoon bfive to be taken seriously .in his engagements. Alga Khan and Diagano have Hot clone fast work . since returning from Trentham, but both are in excellent order and this morning did nice steady pace work. .. J. Fryer’s team, Gibraltar, Chief Line, March Ailone, Green Linnet, Oriel and Weutherzane were allotted useful pace exercise. Sfihdlatk and Benedictivq galloped a baujfie of furlongs, Bandlark finishing wfell ih. front in 27sec._ Richfield was apportioned l two- rounds Of half pace work. Calamine -was -given steady exercise and Ingenuity trotted and cantered. * Arouse worked solidly over fi couple of rounds df the isfind and No Doubt worked on the inside plough. Although missing Auckland, J. Fryer will have a team for the Waikato meeting on November 18 land 20, consisting of Gibraltar, Green Linnet, Oriel and Chief Line. St. Clara has had a few days’ spell arid, looking well, was out doing easy pace work. Quite fi number of newcomers are working oh the Hawera tracks and the horses, an active commission number 40. M. Conway has a, team of five under his care, viz.: Don Erma, by Daniloff— Erma; Oailamine, by Callaghan— Peeima; Ingenuity, by High Set—lntelligence ; find Miss Llouvaine, by Callaghan—Fertility. Fertility is out of Generosity, the dam of Hushman, a useful ipferformeir some seasons back. Besides Q. "Cox’s, pair, Round Table and Friesland, R. Brough has his own youngster by Colossus—Lady Egletiiio, a hunter, by Star Stream, to prepare for lnirdle racing and his latest addition is a three-year-old. Tilly by Chief Ruler from Rosie Desmond. The latter is the dam of. two brilliant performers in Kiosk aiid Mireusonta, also Just So, who was a .smart performer. On breeding lines this filly has great possibilities. The three-year-old obit Epigram was responsible for a good gallop, at Trentham on Saturday morning. Carrying a lightweight, he ran a mile and a quarter on the plough in 2.9. Bettwsyeoed picked him up a.t the mile post, the last half in S'2see. Epigram finished aiid pulled up well, and has improved with his recent racing. Even allowing for the fast track and light weight, the time was very good, while a heavy wind was against them on the home turn. Bettwsyeoed, who was beaten :by three lengths, is suffering from a “knee,” and she may not be at her best for Riccarton. W. E. Pine replaces G. .Duncan bn Epigram in the New Zealand Cup, Duncan having been suspen'ded for a month at Waverley. Eminent is again in strong work, but Forestry finished clear of him at the end of .six furlongs in 1.17. lii a recciVfc reference to Silver Scorn the “Sydney Referee” said: lb is interesting to hear tlio opinions of men long experienced in tlie racing game as to the probable causes of Silver Scorn’s failures since her arrival in Australia. One good judge, is emphatic that the New Zealand -filly was overdone last season, when she had 13 starts, most of them entailing some travelling, for she won races from Dunedin to Auckland. -Silver Scorn ran her best races when -she had fined down considerably, and with so many races while in this condition—one almost might say mean condition—this hats possibly found her out.
THE TIME TEST Three time records have been entered in Australia this season. At the Warwick Farm meeting on September 9 Turbine, 8.0, ran the seven furlongs in the Tramway Handicap in 1.23 J. At Caulfield last Saturday Gaine Oanringtdn, 8.13, encompassed the mile and a half in the Caulfield 'Gup in 2.28 J. On the -same day Adored, 8.0, -won the Mona Nursery. 4J furlongs, in 53Jsee. There is fflehty of evidence that the tiiue test is not taken very 'seriously ni England, and, when all the cireunistanops fiii'e considered, this does not seeiii remarkable. > English racecourses are meaiSu fed in the centre, and naturally in the ch'se of a. circular course n. horse skirting the rails all the way Would ruii co’nsidefa-blv less than the advertised , distance. It ha-s also been rev'eaied that certain English courses have not been surveyed and measured for ■ e'enturies, and, with alterations made tp the tracks, barriers have been moved foaefewarcl or forward, while the winiiing-post has ireinained in the same place. The fol, lowing is a. list of time records f-dr sevfeh -principal di-stances in England and Australia :
GAINE CARRINGTON’S VICTORY By winning the Caulfield Cup Gaine Carrington completely reinstated himself, and, as he carried 8.13, onlj r lib less than woight-for-age, and established an Australian and Now Zealand record for a mile and a half, his performance speaks for itself. . A year ago the Melbourne bookmaker Mr J. A. Phillips bought Gaine Carrington in the hope that ho would wan the Victoria Derby, but he had to be content with .second place to Liberal, find it was not until the autumn that He won the Lloyd Stakes, weight-for-age, one.mile. He was eased up- after running unplaced in the Doncaster Handicap 'at Elandvdck, which was his last- race a.t three years old, and at that stage it was argued in some quarters that his prospects did not look at all bright. In the October Stakes, weight-for-age, One mile, at Flemington on October 7, he made a game ' effort, but third to Middle "Watch and L’Elite wais the best he could manage, w’hile at Caiuil field on October 14 he carried 9.3 into third place behind Chilperic, 8.13, and Turbine, 8.8, in the To ora k Handicap. Some doubt as to his ability to ista.y out a strongly run mile arid a half wais expressed, bait apparently ho bad fully satisfied his party on that important point, for he was heavily supported, although he actually started at a double-figure price. Uip to the .present Gaine Carrington has contested" 25 races, and his record is a.s follows : UnFirst Second Third placed
*ln the Clibborn Stakes at Rnndwiek last spring Gain© Carrington finished fibst, but oni the ground of interference the steward® awarded the race to Tingklba. -and! placed the New Zealand colt second. He also -rail a: dead-heat witli •Chatham for -second place in the Qir •Slakes. . ~
