A La Rochelle message states that France’s “hell ship,’’ Le Martiniere, sailed to-night with a load of 670 caged convicts bound for Devil’s Island. It was rumoured that the convicts intended to mutiny prior to embarkation, so they were relieved of their shoes and made to walk in clogs to the quayside, escorted by troops with fixed bayonets. One murderer, Boyer, had been literally within minutes of death. The morning he was due to be guillotined news came of President Douiner’s assassination, and tlie new President could not consider the petition for commutation of the sentence without a new. trial. Boyer was given the benefit of tiie. doubt and sent to Guiana.
