AMERICAN RECOVERY PLAN HUNDRED THOUSAND IDLE. LABOUR REQUEST TO CONGRESS. THIRTY-HOUR WORKING WEEK. (United Press A association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) NEW YORK, Sept. 28. Nearly 100,000 strikers are hampering the coal, steel, automobile a)nd silk in* •dustiries in the United States. Ten thousand steel 1 workers are idle in West Virginia and Panhandle. More than 70,000 eoa'l miners are away from the shits in Pennsylvania. There rs a Ford! plant .strike at Edgowater and New Jersey, and there are numerous minor strikes throughout the country. Air William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, aunoulnlccd .to-day that Labour will ask Congress to approve of a 30-hour week unless the National Recovery Administration codes are revised to provide for shorter hours and higher pay. The an'ouncement came following a survey issued by Mr Green stating that 815,000 persons had returned to work during August, representing * - greater progress in employment than in any month since the depression, but that 11,001,000 unemployed remained and the relief needs of this winter will be greater than ever before.” It is estimated! that possibly 4,500,000 families will require such relief.
