TANGAHOE.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Taugahoe is tlie correct name of the river .south of Hawera. Bor nearly-six centuries that has been the name-—.since the days of Turi of the Aotea. canoe. Yet of recent years there has been a. tendency to mis-spell the cname ‘ a T*c>ngahoo. ’ ’ Now jthsvt ’the deviation is in progress the name will frequently be used. Sir George Grey, Mr S. Percy Smith, Mr James Cowan and all the"authorities use the correct ■spelling, Tangalioe. The official survey maps give the correct spelling, Tangalioe. The Maoris have a saying (pepeha) recorded by Mr James Cowan :
“Tangalioe tangata, e haere, Tangalioe ia, e kore e haere” (“Men of Tangalioe depart, but tlie current of Tangalioe remains.”) May wp not retain the correct name of this historic river?—l am, etc., JOHN HOUSTON.
