FARMERS’ NEW PAPER

SOME “POINT BLANK” QUERIES.

MANAiWATUi DAIRYMEN CRITICAL

PALMERSTON N., Sept. 29. A copy of the first issue of the new journal of the New Zealand! Farmers’ Union, entitled “Point Blank,” was received by the executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union yesterday. Members were ready with pertinent questions regarding the new venture. Mr J. Boyce asked if a committee had been set up to o.k. the articles that were to be printed in the journal, and received a reply from the chair-i man (Mr N. Campbell) that Mr Poison, Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union, had looked. through everything that was submitted.... Mr Boyce: Then it is likely to be more or ‘less a, political project. Mr H. Seifert : If Mr Poison is going to overlook the articles, we know what will be in the paper. The chairman: But the Dominion executive is going to frame the policy of the paper. The secretary : Mr Good fellow likes the title of it. Mi’ E. O. Bond: As the journal will start and finish with Mr Poison, I will move that we do not support the paper 1 unless a committee Is set rip and we have direct representation in the management. I; am not satisfied to allow Mr Poison to be sole censor. I might have added that we haven’t any faith in him. lam not against a union paper, but I want to isee it on right lines. Mr P. Koehler urged support for the paper for twelve months. If any reform in its policy was needed, it could come ■ afterward. Mr Bond: That is about as mad a suggestion as I have ever listened to. How can. you correct a foundation once the roof is on? If we are to support it financially, surely we should have direct representation in the management. The chairman: The Dominion executive would soon ispeak up if anything went wrong. I can assure you there are two sides on the Dominion executive, and the Dairy Farmers’ Union is represented on the advisory committee. In view of the chairman’s aissurance Mr Bond withdrew his motion, and it was decided to support the paper for twelve months. . Later in the meeting Mr A. E. Robinson, editor of “Farming First, 1 ” the organ of the Auckland section of the Farmers’ Union, entered, and his introduction to the meeting brought Mr F. J. Legg to his feet. He asked why one paper could not do for all New Zealand.

Mr Riobinson : Will one paper do? Mr Legg: It should. Mr Robinson: This one (“Point Blank”) won’t do us.
