CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. A spectacular motor smash occurred on the Main South Road at Socle burn early this morning when a five-seater ear coming from the city failed to take a corner and violently crashed on a power pole. The force of the impact carried away the front of the car, smashed the chassis and left one headlamp embedded in the woodwork under the screen. , The car finally rested with its rear.wheels on top of a hedge and the. front wheels high up against the pole, so that it was possible to walk underneath.
The electric lines broke, but the occupants miraculously escaped death. T. Hamilton, of Riccarton, suffered head injuries and a. fractured leg and was. sent to hospital. His condition is not serious. S'. Borton, of Opawa (the driver) and Clarence Burt, of Addington, were Treated as outpatients and discharged.
