THREE-DAY HAWERA SEASON
ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMME
Further arrangements in connection with the Egmont A. and P. Association’s three-day jubilee show at Hawera in November were finalised at a meeting of the jubilee committee held last evening. In the absence of Mr J. E. Campbell, Air Alex Hunter (president) occupied the chair, and also present were Alessrs. J. W. J. Harding, A. Blair, H. Hughes, W. White, A\ . C. Fyfe, T. C. Hobbs junr., H. Ai. Caselberg, J. N. Henry, J. Edmondston B. C. Bennett, R. H. Leece, W. W. Davy, L. H. Olapham and C. Dahl and Dr. T. Fitzgerald. A programme of athletic events arranged by the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club was received from Mr T. R. Overton and approved as follow : 100 yards men, ICK) yards ladies, 220, 440 and 880 yards men, one mile and three mile cycle, high jump and secondary school boys’ race. It was agreed to" offer first prizes to the value of £ 1 and second prizes to the value of 10s 6d, except in the case of the three-mile cycle event, for which the prizes would be £2 2s and £1 Is respectively. Mr Olapham stated that the Hawera Boys’ Club would give a gymnastic display on any evening during the show. Air Henry, on oehalf of the Territorial volunteer forces, submitted a programme of s-x events, which were approved : Best turned-out mounted rifleman; tent-pegging by mounted rifles ; alarm race by infantry ; wrestling on horseback; tent pitching by cadets; tug-of-war on horseback. In this tion prize money amounting to £7 7s 6d also was approved. Mr Leece submitted a programme of motor car events, to include toboganning, musical chairs and potato race. At this stage Air Campbell attended the meeting and took the chair. Several suggestions were made for spectacular' lighting effects on Hie showgrounds and around the stands, and it was thought that the jubilee sign used in connection with the Hawera Borough jubilee could again be utilised. It was reported that Alajor Jenkins, of the Salvation Army Boys’ Home, Eltham, had offered the assistance of the boys’ band. Axemen’s carnival events approved included loin, standing chop (open), 12in. standing chop (open) and local chop (within the boundaries of Eltliam. Opunake and Patea), entries to close on October 25 at 8 p.m., and handicaps to be declared on October 28. A tug-of-war competition was approved, “teams to consist of five men. the maximum weight of each team to be 60 stone. Elntries close on October 28. A ladies’ tug-of-war competition also was approved. At the conclusion of the meeting a special sub-committee appointed for the purpose decided on the following order of programme : Wednesday afternoon (November 8). Wood chopping to commence at 1.30 p.m., trotting, Army Bund and gymnastic display. Evening: Tug-of-war to commence at 7.30 o’clock, athletic carnival. Thursday afternoon (November 9).--Six military events; grand parade and steer-riding, music by the Hawera Highland Pipe Band and Hawera Municipal Band. Friday afternoon (November 10). — Hawera High School Band, folk dancing. motor car events. Alaori entertainers, ponv riding, potato race on horseback apple bobbing competition, bovs tu"-of-war. children’s decorated prams and vehicles. Evening: Gymnastic display and fireworks.
