WOMAN DRIVER FINED
SENSATIONAL, PARNELL SMASH ROD PIERCES MAN’S NECK (By Telegraj>h—-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 27. As jv. sequel to a sensational accident in Parnell on July 7, when two ears collided and Robert Burns, who was a passenger in one had his neck pierced by a steel curtain rod, the driver of one car, Annette Thorne George, was prosecuted to-day on a charge, of negligent driving and failing to give way. The police withdrew the first charge and defendant pleaded guilty to the second. Her counsel said the facts were less serious than might appear. Burns had been discharged from hospital, but the degree of negligence should not 'be judged by the extent of a man’s injuries. Defendant was fined £2 and costs.
Burns made a remarkable recovery. Before he oould be taken to the hospital the rod had to be sawn from the base by a hacksaw. At the hospital the rest of the rod was withdrawn by a surgeon and a tube was inserted to enable him to breath meanwhile.
