BOMBERS OVER PEKING
JAPANESE REPEAT WARNING HOSTILITY TO FANG CHEN WU. DEMAND FOR. WITHDRAWAL. BATTLE THOUGHT INEVITABLE. (United PrtßS association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 10.15 a.m. to-day. PEKING, Sept. 26. Four Japanese bombers roared over Peking to-day dropping a further shower of leaflets reiterating the intention to drive Fang Chen Wu from the demilitarised zone in accordance with the ultimatum expiring to-mor-row. The Chinese press expresses fears that the bandits’ chief “Old Rat” will attempt to create disturbances behind the lines in Peking and Tientsin. Fang Chen Wu has rejected the Japanese ultimatum demanding his withdrawal from Peking. Hostilities are therefore inevitable to-morrow. A Japanese ’plane has already dropped a bomb at Shunyi, South Niulanshan, but Japanese officials here declare that the Japanese forces will not cross the truce line in pursuit of a rabble. The Peking authorities are confident that they are able to safeguard the city. EASTERN RAILWAY DISPUTE. SEVERAL RUSSIANS ARRESTED PROTEST BY CONSUL.. SHANGHAI, Sept. 26. Following the arrest of four Soviet citizefis and technical servants on Hie Chinese Eastern Railway on September 24 three others were taken into custody yesterday, including the • iionmastor at Pogranitchnnys, m connection with itlie .alleged! wrongful evacuation of 79 locomotives, the pioperty of the Chinese Eastern Railway, info Siberia. An accountant was Arrested for alleged monetary irregularities. . Mr Slavutsky, the Harbin ConsulGeneral, has entered a strong verbal protest and received a reply that Manehukuo’s action was not taken against the men as Soviet citizens but as railway employees legally responsible lor wrongful acts. Business on the railway is now reported to be at a standstill. Rumours that these arrests were preliminary to Manchukuo taking over the line are denied, though the denials me accepted sceptically.
