ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
FIRST OF BYRD’S SHIPS. DEPARTURE FROM BOSTON. (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph Copyright.) ' BOSTON, Sept. 25. The barquentine Bear of Oakland sailed on Monday for the Antarctic with scientific equipment valued at 100,000 dollars.. Rear-Admiral Byrd went down the harbour in the vessel, returning with the pilot. Dunedin, New Zealand, will be the Bear of Oakland’s base, where it will be joined by the expedition’s other vessel, the Jacob Ruppert, formerly the Pacific Fir. The cargoes are to be shifted at Dunedin before the ships begin the voyage to the frozen land. Inside the Bay of Whales the Bear will land Rear-Admiral Byrd and a party of 40 who will remain there during the Antarctic winter.
