Auckland defeated West Coast in a representative League match played nr, Carlaw Park by 28 points to 22. Conditions were ideal. The attendance was BCOO. The home backs were too clever on attack; Cooke, th*c. All Black star, played a great game and scored three 1 tries. West Coast forwards made a great effort in the last ten -minutes and excited 1 the crowd with bustling tactics. A reliable goallcicker would have won the game for West Coast. Newton, Glynn and Colder played line games. Dodds was the best back. Martin at full-back cost West Coast several tries by weak handling. Early in the game Cooke made a brilliant opening and passed tt Schultz. The forward Glynn made a great run to Auckland’s twenty-five. Campbell saved. Cooke received tc score a great try; which Campbell converted. Dodds and Hart combiner
well; amidst excitement Newton was pulled down a yard from the Auckland line. West Co’ast was superior in the ; forwards. Hunt picked up in the loose , and passed'to Newton. Calder scored and Dodds converted to make the , scores equal. West Coast backs played good footfall. Clarke with a great run from past half-way beat Martin; Lawless knocked on. Hall beat Martin and scored. Campbell converted (16 —5). Axeman, Prentice and Gookei raced
away and Cooke kicked a fine penalty goal and half-time found Auckland leading 20—?. Dodds made a brilliant run n.nO Devonport' scored. West Coast played better. Boban missed a try. Newton was prominent in a forward rush and scored. .Masters missed converting. Wavne made a clever opening and that Campbell could not convert. The crowd cheered a great effort by the West Coast forwards. Glynn just missed. O’Connor passed to Dodds for fine solo try. Calder missed. The home side "was clever in positional pla’y. Schultz started a passing bout and five Auckland players handled for Cooke to score a try that Campbell converted. The "West* Const forwaicis swept over the opposition and 'O’Connor scored. Amidst excitement Neuton scored a splendid try —and the sixth successive goal was missed. The game ended 28 —22.

The first spell provided a mediocre display and at half-time Otago led 4 —o. Canterbury improved in the second spell and scored five tries, of which tuo ueic converted. AUSTRALIAN TEAM ON TOUR. ST. HELEN’S RECS BEATEN. LONDON, Aug. .26. The Australian League team defeated St. Helen’s Rees by 13 to 9 after the Rocs led by 6 to 3 at half-time. The Australian team to play Leigh on Wednesday will be Smith, Ridley, C. Pearce, Laws, Neumann, Mead, Tlnicknesse, Bibbs, Little, Curren, O’Connor, Dempsey and Doyle.
