of age. Air T. C. List, District Governor of Rotary in New Zealand, returned to New Plymouth last night after attending a conference of Rotary Governors at Poland Spring, Alaine, and the International Rotary Convention at Boston, U.S.A. Air 11. E. Field, son of Mr and Mrs H. Field, Timaru, who three years ago won a Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship, lias been awarded the degree of doctor of philosophy of London University. He had a brilliant career at Canterbury College, to which he went from the Timaru Boys’ High School. Dr. Field has accepted an appointment at the London University. The death occurred ’at Wellington yesterday of Father Stanislaus Alahouey, says a Press Association message. Born in London in 1866, Father Mahoney came to New Zealand with his parents and was ordained a priest in 1893, subsequently working in the Christchurch, Hokitika, Nelson and Wanganui districts. He was appointed parish priest of St. Alary of the Angels, Wellington, In 1-918, and there he had been since.

At the riawera ■ Rotary Club’s luncheon yesterday the vice-president (Air. F. W. Horner) said it was rare indeed that sympathy had to be expressed to three members at one meeting on the death of relatives. During the week Air F. W. Sutton had suffered bereavement in the death of his wife, while the deaths had also occurred of the. mother of Air A. K. Fyson and the father of Dr. Thomson. Votes of sympathy were accorded the bereaved rent ives, members standing in silence.

Mr P. C. Garuham, New Plymouth, is to retire from the service of the Bank of New South Wales on September 30 after being connected with the institution for the past 44 years. For thc past nine years Mr Garnham lias been manager of the New Plymouth branch of the. bank, prior .to which he was senior auditor and senior relieving officer of the bank in New Zealand. Mr Garnham came to New Zealand from Sydney 31 years ago, and has been stationed at Napier, Masterton and Wellington. In 1906 he was appointed accountant at the Auckland branch and later held positions as manager at Eltham and Hamilton. Mr Garnham’s successor as manager of the bank at New Plymouth will be Mr B. E. E. Whitcombe, at present manager at Timaru. Tt is the intention of Mr and Mrs Garnham to travel prior to deciding on a residential centre.

At the monthly meet.ng last night if the South Taranaki Automobile Association. at Hawera, a tribute was naid to the good work of Mr W. O’CalLvdinn as president of the North Island Union and a motion of con-Tat-iilation on his re-election was passed bv acclamation. The chairman (Mr ' A.
