COMING-OF-AGE PARTY
MR.. M. SHAW ENTERTAINED To celebrate the eomnig-of-age of their son Maurice, Air and Alus W. 11. Shaw, of Hawora, entertained a. large party of friends on Thursday evening m the Foresters’ Hall. The evening proved replete with enjoyment. Alins Slnwr and her sister, Airs C. Roebuck, received! the guests, the former wearing a. frock of Burgundy ring velvet and angelskin lace and the latter brown chenille georgette and red brocade cape. Among the ladies present were Afesdames T. Hobbs, black cel ariose and georgette; Mitchell, black satin and shawl; Quitch, flora'll silk voile; H. F. Fredericks, white and black; J. W. J. Harding, maroon crepe; F. Aleredith, black lace and| velvet coatee; Whitby James, black frock and gold brocade coat; H. Briggs floral angeltskin and lace: G. Hlarding, floral georgette; J. K. Also among the visiting guests were Airs J. Alitchell and Air Ben Tippens, of New Plymouth, father of Airs Shaw. Roth of them arc over eighty and both keenly enjoyed the evening’s amusements. I The decorations of the hall, designed j in a yellow and blue scheme, combined j the colours of the Egmont Alpine Club and the Alhambra Hockey Club. J Streamers were suspended across 1 thej hall and 1 in the lounge, while the sup-
r tables were prettily arranged and L off in white and red. A, pretty 'bouquet was made and preiited to Airs Shaw by Airs T. C. jfolbs.
The birthday cake was made by Airs Shaw and iced and decorated by Ali-s W. Humphries and on it were twentyone kewpies and flaigs. It was cat with due ceremony by the guest of the evening. Another emblem of the occasion was a large painted key made by Air E.. Faster. It was formally presented by Air AV. B. Shay as “the key of the back door.” The guests then inscribed their names upon it. On a table in the lounge were set out a large number of presents, useful and artistic, and a number of messages of congratulation. Prominent among these was a telegram from the Chateau sent by Aliss B. Buist and Alessrs Palmer, Rod Synie and Snowdon, giving some of the results of mountain races in which the Egmont Club members were prominent.
The Rev. H. AVhitby James presided and." after giving the Loyal toast, lie proposed that t-o Air Ala.urice Shaw, a sportsman, a- good son and a church man. Alaurice had been, said Mr James, the lion, secretary of the St. Alary’s Lads’ Club and Bible Glass and on their behalf Air James made a -presentation of Alaw.son’s “Home of the Blizzard,” in recognition of hiis good work and of liis interest in Alpine Club affairs. -.ln wishing Alaurice many happy returns, Al.r James said the former’s work bad indicated that lie would bo a. useful citizen of the-future. Al.r James also presented the guest with a, cheque on 'behalf of the latter s parents. Air Alaurice Shaw extended appropriate thanks for the very kind reception accorded him and his appreciation of the good wishes expressed and the handsome presents received.
The health of Air Beil Tippens was proposed by Air A. B. Stevens, who congratulated Air Tippens on passing his eightieth birthday and took occasion to add good wishes from the Volunteer Territorials to Air Alaurice Shaw. The toast of Air and Airs Shorn- was proposed bv Air H. Briggs, who said that they should be proud of tlieir son and added congratulations. Ah- Shaw replied suitably.
