Fa rain and Gerald Smith (na,vy team) 6—4, 6—<l, 6—3 ; Allison and Van Rvn heat E. B. Benedict aind D. P. Robinson (Boston), 6 —d, 6—4, 6 1. Tennis observers who accompanied Ellsworth Vines, United States champion, through Europe and were with him a,t Newport laist week are not very hopeful of his chances in the national singles tournament if lie meets Crawford (Australia), and they consider F. J. Perry England) and F. Shields (United States) only a little less dangerous to Vines in defending Ins title.
