TRIBUTE'S TO PUBLIC WORK

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 2. The late Mr .T. McCombs, Member of Parliament for Lyttelton, whose death occurred this morning, became unwell last week. He had a slight stroke on Saturday, from which. he rallied and appeared to be recovering. His condition yesterday was causing no concern, but he died of heart failure in bed early this morning. The funeral probably will take place on Friday. He was aged 60 and had been the Member of Parliament for Lyttelton for 20 years, being returned at the election of 1913. He also was one of the most prominent prohibition advocates in the Dominion. He. took a leading part in many . Arbitration Court eases. After leaving school lie studied for the Anglican ministry and was a licensed preacher, hut diverted his attention to philanthropic, temperance' and political work. Expressive tributes have been paid by many public men. His former colleagues of the Lyttelton Harbour Board carried a motion of sympathy, several members remarking that his death meant a national loss. Mr E. J Howard, M.P. for Christchurch South, said Mr McCombs was a likeable and loveable man and it was remarkable that lie so often was misunderstood.
