A claim for £IOO as damages for alleged slander was made against George Sydney Simpson, licensee of Warner’s Hotel, in the Magistrate’s Court today by William Thomas Russell, formerly employed as barman-porter by defendant. . Plaintiff’s duties as a servant in the hotel were to supply drinks and cigarettes from the bar. His engagement wais terminated by Simpson, and when Simpson was interviewed by the secretary of the Hotel Employees’ Union Simpson said Russell had taken_ cigarettes from the bar without paying for them. The magistrate awarded £SO damages to' plaintiff, with costs.
