BROADSIDE CHAMPIONS

AUCKLAND SEASON ENDED. ENGLISH RIDERS’ SUCCESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Feb. 26. Spectacular cinder track racing, which included a series of . close finishes and a number of spills, was witnessed by a crowd of over 6000, the largest of the season, at the final breadsiding meeting at the Western Springs speedway last evening. The most .successful rider was N. Key, England, who defeated W. Phillips, afco of England, in the final of the New Zealand open championship and the Span Cup series and later won a match race against Phillips. The Wellington champion, W. Kilmister, came to grief in the first event and did not ride again. He started from an an outside position with A. Mattson, Auckland, on the inside and R. Tauser, America, in the centre. At the start Tauser and Kilmister beat Mattson into the first bend, but the local man wapi first out of the corner and had a clear lead on the back straight. Tauser’s machine humped Kilmister’s, forcing the Wellington man against one of the gates, which was not completely closed. Kilmiister was unseated and his machine was damaged extensively.
