Peter Verigin, leader of the 6000 Deukhobors in Canada, was released from custody to-day"'by order of Mr Justice Humphrey MeQlish in the Supreme Court. Verigin’s sentence of 18 months in the Prince Albert prison for perjury had been commuted at nine months in order that he could be deported to Russia. Mr Justice Mellish. however, ruled that commutation was unconditional, wiping out the imprisonment for which Verigin was being deported; therefore there was no ground for deporting him.
