OHAWE
(From Our Own Correspondent). WEEK-END VISITORS. There was again a large number of visitors at Ohawe beach yesterday, the weather being all that could be desired. A nice sea and the beach well sanded added to the pleasure of the hundreds who indulged in bathing. The swimming pool was well patronised and was quite a sight about 4 -o’clock With tiie very large number of both old and .young bathers. The sandbank and beach was lined with onlookers who added to the picture. There was also a very large crowd at the diving pool in the river, the springboard being kept very busy. The fishing launch Raurimu was taken out on a fishing excursion and returned early in the afternoon, the result of the catch benig 50 sehnapper which found a ready sale to the visitors. A very large slip on the domain frontage to the sea took place last Sunday week early in the morning, between 5000 to 6000 yards of earth being displaced. There are still some large cracks showing in the face oi the hill. Visitors are warned not to keep too close as the cliff is at present dangerous. Several people were sitting under the hill in question yesterday until warned of the danger. The lifesaving teams were in attendance yesterday, but fortunately their services were not required. The' teams are improving wonderfully in their drill and are to be congratulated on their good work at the recent competitions at Opunalce. It is their intention to hold a life saving competition at Ohawe beach at an early date. From what was seen yesterday when a .swimming race took place with the teams they should all have a say in the prizes. The Beach Improvement Society is taking active steps to remove the- very many rocks .from the beach front as soon as they uncover sufficiently for the use of explosives. The Hayward brothers have arranged to remove the. stones on a face from the front as soon as blasted. A meeting of the society wilt be held during the week when matters in connection with the basin reserve and other subjects will be discussed. i PERSONAL. Mr. Bamford, the patron of the Ohawe Lifesaving Club, who has been spending bis annual holidays at the beach, is returning to take up his duties at the university on Friday next. During his stay lie has, ?s always, taken a very ’active part in instructing the teams and overhauling the reel. Mr. arid Mrs Keith, formerly of the Ohawe store, are leaving to take up their residence at Waitara on Saturday next, having purchased a business there.
